What Is NBA Topshot?

What Is NBA Topshot?

The NBA's Top Shot product is a blockchain-based virtual trading card platform. It was born out of a partnership between the NBA, the NBA Players Association and Dapper Labs. It's where fans can buy, sell, and trade NBA moments, which are packaged highlights that work like trading cards. Just as basketball fans collect physical objects, Top Shot effectively brings that experience into the digital realm, with users hoping that the value of their great collection will increase over time.

 About NBA Topshot Moments

Moments are video highlights sold as NFTs on NBA Top Shot. Like traditional sports trading cards, Moments add value based on their rarity. The rarer the video clip, the higher its potential value as a collectible. Like other NFTs that represent real-world items, from artwork to in-game items to music, each Moment is an NFT officially licensed by the NBA with a unique serial number and data, including game and player stats.

Moments generally fall into four categories: Common Moments, Fan Moments, Rare Moments, and Legendary Moments.

-Common: 96.6% of total moments. These are the largest releases, designed to "provide a shared collective experience for fans around the world." They are readily available and widely available. For example, there's Carmelo Anthony's 3-pointer. There are 40,000 NFTs in circulation at the moment.

-Fandom: There are no fixed percentages of Fandom NFTs in Top Shots, these are based on special experiences associated with specific events. For example, you might be able to buy Moment in a real-world game of significance.

-Rare: 2.25% of total moments. Rare moments on Top Shot are more unique and harder to come by. Often, they feature historic games by NBA legends. For example, there were 750 Trae Young's shoulder-swing 3-pointers in circulation.

-Legendary: 0.11% of total moments. These Top Shot moments are extremely rare and hard to come by. For example, there were 120 Antetokounmpo moments in the NBA Finals.
